Diagnosing Venous Insufficiency
Interventional radiologists specially trained in performing minimally invasive treatments under imaging guidance will assess the anatomy of the veins and the direction of blood flow in these vessels.
Using ultrasound, they will map and measure the veins in the legs and check if they are open and competent to determine if a patient is a candidate for endovenous laser therapy, cyanoacrylate adhesive closure or mechanicochemical ablation.
Medical Treatment
Endovenous ablation of superficial venous disease is effective in improving symptoms and the appearance of varicose veins with very high success and patient satisfaction rates. There are multiple proven minimally invasive techniques to treat varicose veins that require little-to-no downtime.
Endovenous Laser Ablation
- Laser therapy is delivered through a thin fiber within the damaged vein and delivers energy, causing the vein to close and seal shut.
- Usually takes 1-1.5 hours and is performed under local anesthesia only, without need of sedation
- Local anesthesia is injected along the length of the entire vein for protection and numbing.
- Patients can resume most normal activities immediately, with little or no pain after a short course of compression stockings
- There is no significant scar, as the procedure requires only a small nick in the skin, about the size of a pencil tip
- Covered by most insurance carriers, based on medical necessity for symptom relief

Cyanoacrylate Adhesive Closure
- Closure of the damaged vein occurs by sealing it closed with medical adhesive (cyanoacrylate)
- Usually takes 1-1.5 hours without the need for sedation
- Only one needle stick required for numbing medicine
- No compression stockings after the procedure
- Normal activity may be resumed immediately after the procedure
Mechanicochemical Ablation
- The malfunctioning vein is treated by delivering a medication through a rotating wire tip in the vein, all performed through a single pin-sized entry.
- Usually takes 1 hour and is performed without sedation
- Only one needle stick required for numbing medicine
- Patients can resume most normal activities immediately, with little or no pain after a short course of compression stockings
Compression Stockings
Millions of Americans whose jobs require them to stand for long periods of time are all too familiar with leg pain. This common problem can also be caused by sitting for extended periods, including long plane flights or hours of sitting at a desk, and can even result from physical activity.
Compression stockings can relieve pain and help prevent future issues. Come in for your measurement and to learn more about these life-changing tools.
